4/12/24: ETH's Contentious Upgrade ⚙️💸🇭🇰

Specs’ Breakdown

1. EIP-3074 approved for the next Ethereum hard fork, Pectra

⌐◪-◪ → EIP-3074 will be included in Ethereum’s next hard fork Pectra, enabling monumental upgrades to the Ethereum wallet UX.

The simple explanation of 3074 is that it gives EOAs (externally owned accounts - aka normal wallets) smart contract capabilities like account abstraction. This includes things like:

  • batched txs

  • single tx approvals

  • sponsored txs (someone else pays gas)

  • asset recovery

Right now to swap tokens on Uniswap, you have to first approve Uniswap to use your tokens, then run the actual swap. It’s super annoying, but EPI-3074 finally solves this!

With that said, not everybody is happy about the upgrade, with many citing security real concerns such as 1-click wallet drains.

Personally, I’m excited about the upgrade and think the community will address the potential security risks. Besides, to Foobar’s point, you can already instant-drain your wallet by mishandling your private key.

2. Circle launches $USDC redemptions for Blackrock’s $BUIDL fund

⌐◪-◪ → Stablecoin issuer Circle just implemented smart contract support for investors in BlackRock’s USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL).

This means BUIDL investors can instantly redeem their shares for USDC 24/7/365.

This simple integration showcases the true power of blockchain to all of Wall Street, who is currently subject to more manual, clunky, and inefficient redemption processes for TradFi funds (like the BTC ETFs).

This move is reminiscent of when Bitwise revealed the BTC holdings address for their ETF, showcasing Blockchain’s incredible ability to transparently prove holdings in real time — something TradFi was never able to do. The best thing TradFi has is audited quarterly financials. Dumb.

Lastly, BlackRock’s BUIDL fund just transferred $250k to Ondo Finance, marking their first transaction into a public RWA protocol. Bullish for the RWA narrative.

3. Hong Kong to approve BTC ETF by Monday, says Bloomberg

⌐◪-◪ → Hong Kong is desperately trying to catch up to the U.S. in what I’ve dubbed, The Great Bitcoin Race, by fast-tracking the approval of their spot Bitcoin ETFs.

More interestingly however is the rumor that they might approve Ether ETFs in addition to the Bitcoin ETFs, which would put them ahead of the U.S. in some regards.

While the timeline isn’t fixed, sources estimate approvals could come as soon as Friday (today) with possible trading by the end of the month.

If this goes through, it will unlock an estimated $25B in demand from Chinese investors, which is pretty bullish when combined with the halving in 7 days.

Fun fact: Bitcoin will be scarcer than Gold post-halving in terms of stock-to-flow ratio or inflation rate.
